Editing Services
There are several types of editing (listed below), and an experienced editor will be able to review your writing and clearly explain which level is needed.
Please contact me at [email protected] for a detailed quote and a sample edit (in Word with tracked changes and comments). A sample edit shows you how I would approach editing your manuscript, which would alleviate any concerns during the process and show you whether we'd be a good fit for working together. Editing is a collaborative process.
My fees are competitive, in line with guidelines set out by the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) and vary with the scope and complexity of the given project. Each step in the editorial process takes a different amount of time (a heavy, substantive edit will take more time than a copy edit), which affects the overall cost. I am able to quote and charge in British pounds, euros, Canadian dollars, or American dollars, as well as per 1,000 words or per project (once I see a sample to base my quote on).

- Developmental or substantive edit: This is a 'big picture' edit focusing on the content and structure of the document to ensure a consistent and clear flow of thoughts, ideas, and actions. It may involve reordering sections and/or working with the author to rewrite sections to create a more balanced and robust story.
- Line edit: This edit focuses on a line by line, word by word review of the manuscript to both smooth the language and correct the copy (the grammar and punctuation of a copy edit). It ensures that the syntax and content are clear and consistent, free of jargon and clichés (plain language when requested), while still retaining the author's 'voice' and appropriate reading level for a polished product.
- Copy edit: This involves editing for grammar, usage, spelling, punctuation, and other mechanics of style; checking for consistency of mechanics and for internal consistency of facts.
- Proofreading: This is the final stage in the editing process (after editing and layout) before printing, where all corrections are checked in a PDF, in addition to word and page breaks, cross-references, and correct placement of tables, figures, and end matter.
